I feel like this time of year I always need to over blush to complete my daily routine. Something, that warms up my face and has a lovely flushed look. I wanted to go over a few blushes that I have been gravitating towards for the fall, some new, and some old favorites.
Revlon Naughty Nude
This is a nude shade, with mauve undertones and some gold shimmer running throughout the blush. I really like this one because it is a mauve tone but has enough beige in it that it doubles as a bronzer. I find I can just slap this one and not need anything else on my cheeks. This formula is their new formula, so it said on the packaging and is super smooth and buttery.
L’Oreal Warm Honey
This L’Oreal blush is a classic in my collection. It is just what it sounds like. Bare Honey with a bit of a tan orange undertone. It is a really lovely, warm-toned but neutral-ish blush. I like it because again, it’s not overly pigmented but is just pigmented enough to create a lovely flush.
Clinique Cola Pop
This was a blush I purchased inspired byMake up your mind and Samantha Jane YT. It is a dark toned plum, red blush that gives the best “just came home from the cold” look to the cheeks. If you go lighthanded, I’m talking a tap on the blush, it blends out beautifully to a sheer red plum shade
Physicians Formula Butter Blush in Vintage Rose
This is a classic blush in my collection. It is a rose blush that pulls a bit nude-pink on me. I love it because of the smooth formula. I think this blush really transcends seasons but it fits in with the current fall rainy weather with its dusty rose vibe.
MAC Peach Twist
MAC Peach twist is a sheertone blush with a copper, peach tones and golden shimmer. This shimmer does not pull glittery on the skin and you can’t go wrong with this one. For me, it pulls a bit more beige warm and matches many eyes looks that are neutral to cool, however, I wouldn’t pair this with say a naked heat.
It is no secret that L’Oreal is one of the biggest beauty brands in the drugstore and one of the biggest owners of other beauty brands. I think that L’Oreal is a somewhat underrated brand because it has been around for so long that everyone is just like “oh yeah that’s the L’Oreal stand”. My bestie loves their infallible matte foundation and I used to love their Lumi true match foundation, alas it expired before I could use it all. However, I notice a few of my favourite products (also bought because of Youtube) are from L’Oreal. They are also one of the few drugstore brands that have more than 6 shades of foundation, the undertones can be a bit iffy, but generally, they have a larger shade range than other drugstore brands.
L’Oreal True Match Blush in Bare Honey
In general L’oreal mascaras and cheek, products are what I gravitate towards. I love blush … as we know… and finding a great nude blush is a bit difficult when it comes to the drugstore. The shade bare honey was used by Estee Lalonde years ago and of course, I bought it. This blush is intended to be for people with a warm undertone. I have more of a neutral undertone but I find this blush is a simple, fail-safe blush for the daily grind. It has a nice peach undertone without being fully peach. It is also lightly pigmented so I don’t need to worry about overapplying in the morning.
The L’Oreal Glo Lotion
I love me a good glow giver. I resisted buying this for a while because I didn’t really know if it was worth it or not. But after seeing Allana Davison always glowing wearing this, I bit the bullet and spend the $17 on it. Not a drugstore price in my opinion, but I love this for a nice glow to the skin on no makeup makeup days and on days where I’m going for a bit more of a full coverage look.
The L’Oreal Lash paradise
The first mascara I’ve worn where my mother complimented my lashes. This mascara does dry out within 3 months. I mean technically you are supposed to replace your mascara 3-6 months into the tube but I like to get mine teetering on 8 months. (I Know fam I know). This is cheapest on amazon.ca but can be found at shoppersdrugmart and walmart. This gives me the best, fanned out, volumized lashes. I really enjoy this and it doesn’t smudge on me unless user error hits like accidentally smacking your eye with it, it never gets on my lids or on by bottom lash line.
Ah yes it’s that time of year again where I’m rounding up my beauty favourites. I wanted to keep this list curated to new things I discovered this year (that aren’t necessarily new to the market). These are things that I loved using and discovering! Hope you enjoy!
NARS Forte De France. Again, another luxury item on this list. I bought this because i want to the anna edit, and the formula of this highlighter is amazing. Its very hard pressed in the pan so it takes awhile to work into the skin but it’s a great powder to create a glossy look.
Physicians formula butter highlighter. This is such a beautiful stain highlighter. It smells divine (if you don’t like scents stay away from this) and it has a beautiful texture. On the skin it doesn’t look metallic and gives a beautiful satin finish with no glitter. Perfect for mature skin.
I also just got it – but the Anastasia Amrezy Highlighter is just amazing. I can already tell it’s going to be in my rotation. It is a beautiful light brilliant gold that is great for mature and young skin alike!
The Body Shop Fresh Nude foundation. I love this foundation – I compare every foundation I test out to this one. It has a beautiful true satin finish. It is dewy, not cakey, and has a variety of shades. It’s also only $25 which to me is a steal because in Canada most drugstore foundations are in the $18-20 range. Which is wild. So really, in Canadian drugstore terms this is the best drugstore foundation of the year.
Matte option: A nice matte option for the year that I surprisingly enjoyed was the NYX Can’t stop won’t stop foundation. It has nice coverage and yes, it does cling to dry patches, however I have normal skin so when properly hydrated this is a beautiful option for the summer months.
Standout Tinted moisturizer
Nudestixnudies tinted blur stick. This was such an innovative product, I found it at the store before I even saw the launch online and immediately purchased it. I LOVE this product. In fact, I rarely repurchase (okay that’s because I’m always buying and trying) but I’m so close to being finished this and I will repurchase it. It has such a beautiful barely there coverage without being a touch greasy but somehow giving you a dewy finish.
Physiciansformula butter blush. Ah yes, the iconic butter formula from the most expensive (actually it was always expensive so really its the other drugstore products that have hiked up their prices) brand at the drugstore. I love this blush, its a smooth, blendable blush that gives a beautiful flush to the cheeks.
MAC Peachtwist. Another MAC favourite but I couldn’t resist this. I love it! It has a beautiful beach, bronze finish but is also a sheertone blush so it’s buildable and you can go ham with it without looking over blushed.
Burt’s Bees blush in bare peach. This was a great discovery for me this year. I love the entire Burt’s Bees makeup line, except thefoundation. This blush makes me feel good when i wear it both for the shade and he clean ingredients. I love that satin almost matte finish this has, while it is pricey for drugstore (let’s face most products are too pricey now a days) it contains quality ingredients that make me feel good about putting makeup on.
Hourglass ambient lighting bronzer in diffused bronze light. For me, bronzers are the product I own the least of but use the most. I got this from my BFF for my birthday and its wonderful. I haven’t used it as extensively as my butter bronzers, but when I want a seamless glowy look I choose this one. It is also the most standout formula for me that I’ve tried in 2018.
Collection lasting perfection concealer. Gosh dangit. I cannot get this in Canada and don’t overly trust the amazon sellers. Guess I’ll just have to fly to the UK simply to make this purchase. This was such a pleasant surprise. I had heard a lot about this concealer from my faves from the UK, mostlyFleur De Force, but about a year or two ago Allana Davison tried and didn’t like it so I was a bit skeptical. When I saw it on my trip to England, I purchased it. I go home and tried and LOVE the formula. I’ve been on the hunt for a dupe and would say the Annabelle concealer or the Maybelline fit me are the closest dupes. I find with the collection concealer, while it has full coverage I don’t find it heavy under the eyes. That is my problem with high end concealers – they claim all of this stuff but yet i’m still gravitating towards drugstore concealers I genuinely like better.
Anastasia soft glam. I have a feeling this is going to be in a lot of peoples yearly favourites. I really like this palette. It has all the neutral and warm shades I need in my life. The shadows are a bit soft and powdery, but they really just blend themselves our. I also enjoy that I can get quite a few different looks with this palette and that it suits every occasion.
Hourglass Ambient Lighting unlocked palette. I LOVE this palette. It is like the white t shirt you never knew you needed, a quote from Michelle Wang. It has literally everything you need. While the pans are small, I love and use all the shades in this palette. They apply beautifully and give you that lit from within look.
MAC See sheer. I don’t generally foray into the high end world of lipsticks. Mostly because I love a lot of drugstore lipsticks and don’t see the need for my personal collection to own a lot of high end lipstick. However, because of good oldSamantha Ravndhal I bought MAC see sheer and haven’t looked back. It isn’t so much the shade I’m wearing in the winter, but its a good day to day almost red sheer lipstick. I really like it and hope to use it in my project pan in 2019 or in a project pan roulette (still planning those). Also the Fenty gloss bomb was such a staple for me this year! I forgot to photograph both so just imagine my friends.
What were some of your favourite products this year?
We all have a habit of seasoning our makeup – burgundy eye shadow in the fall, darker more mauve blushes, deep berry lipsticks, but I say let’s keep wearing peach! I was looking through my peach blushes and notice I have ones that work extremely well for a fall looks. I don’t think there is anything wrong with seasoning blushes! I do it too! But I’m not ready not drop some of my peach blush love just yet. I wanted to outline a few tricks and swaps I’ve made in my peach blush life to transition them from summer to fall.
For the spring and summer months I like to go the Milani Luminoso route, or shall I say the baked glowy blush route. I had four powder blushes I rotated through along with a few cream ones, that I would either wear on their own or wear in combination with the glowy blushes in my arsenal. The main difference between the peach blushes I’m bringing into fall and the ones I’ve been rotating through are application.
To transition your peach blushes into fall I suggest viewing blush as a mixing medium. For example, I have been panning my Body Shop lip and cheek tint which is a natural rose shade and topping it off with the Hourglass blush. I also have a few shades I suggest that give the same peachy vibe but in a fall esque way.
The first one I am going to talk about is the Burt’s Bees blush in Bare Peach. This blush looks matte in the pan but to me has a more satin finish. It is a darker peach so it gives a more edgy vibe then a bright peach blush like Milani Luminoso. In that way, you can wear this with any fall eye look, presuming its a complimentary shade such a warm brown, neutral brown, or monochromatic with peaches, coral peaches, and borderline cherry red shades as well as and even pinky shades.
Another blush that falls into the vein of fall blush is MAC peachtwist. This is the perfect fall peach blush. It is a more golden peach blush that can go with many eye looks including a peachy eye, a cranberry eye, neutral browns, and monochromatic looks. These blushes are sheertone blushes so they are buildable so that you can go ham and then easily blend them out. Another blush that transcends the fall and is in the peach-honey family is the L’Oreal True Match blush in bare honey(not sure if this colour is available anymore but they always have tons of shades at Superstone in Canada). I bought this because of Estee Lalonde’s old videos where she raved about them and they are very similar to the MAC blush in application and finish. This blush is borderline bronze but is a light shade that is specifically designed for warm undertones. I think that we too often limit ourselves to the season, and if you do that that’s awesome! But there shouldn’t be a pressure to always have to change out your makeup and I think that peach can transcend seasons.
