Current Favourite Nude Lipsticks

I did one of these posts last year outlining some of my favourite nude lipsticks that I wore pretty much on the daily. I love nude lips and they are pretty much the only colour I wear, other than coral. I used to be very into mauves and purples but right now my makeup style is more the coral and nude lips route. I wanted to give you all an update on my current faves that I’ve been rotating between!

Burt’s bees suede splash

A repeat from last year. This is a slightly darker nude for my skin tone but works with most makeup looks I create. It is a beige nude that has a hint of rose.

Covergirl sultry sienna

This is such a lovely shade of lipstick. I find that it is the perfect my lips but better shade. It is only a shade darker than my natural lip color. I also really like the smell of these lipsticks.

Cheekbone beauty Melina

A new favourite that I have been wearing pretty much every day since I got this. The Cheekbone beauty liquid lipstick in Melina. What a lovely, matte but not drying everyday lipsticks. This has a peachy rose undertone and lasts forever on the lips without crumbling off like other liquid lipsticks I’ve used in the pasts. It also has a great meaning behind it (more to come in my cheekbone beauty brand review I’m just slow). Again, this is my lips but better shade as are most of the ones in this blog post.

Clockwise from the bottom: Fenty Gloss balm, Burt's Bees Peony Dew, pixi natural rose lip balm

Fenty gloss bomb

The Fenty gloss bomb is definitely my go-to gloss for any day of the week. It has a rose gold shift that doesn’t make my lips looks strange like many true nude glosses make my lips look. I can wear this on its own or layer it.

Pixi lip balm in Natural Rose

This is lovely hydrating lip product. It is exactly what it sounds like, a rose lip balm. This lip product is easy to wear and has a lovely hydrating finish. AGAIN this is my lips but better shade for me. It fades nicely and lasts quite a long time.

Burt’s bees Peony Dew

This is part of their glossy finish lipstick. It is a bit pinker than it’s counterparts. It has a rose pink base but still fits into the nude category for me on my lips. I find the natural shade of my lips pulls pinky purple so this one fits into the nude lip category for me.

February lip challenge: A recap

A very popular “trend” right now in the beauty community is a buy less mentality, particularly in the project pan community where the goal is to use and love your collection. The goal is also to shop your stash and realize that you don’t need the new shiny thing. I am not good at this (shameless haul plug here) but I am trying to strike that balance of new products and the being more creative with my blog posts by using makeup I already have, curating more lists and doing more in-depth reviews on products. For the month of February, I wanted to do a wee experiment with my obscene lipstick collection. If you follow me on Instagram I posted on my stories or my grid each day showing what lipstick I chose

In January I went through my lipsticks and picked ones that I wear often, and the ones that I never wear (looking at you Marcelle velour liquid lipsticks that I bought in July). I created an excel document and wrote down all the lipsticks I wanted to wear for the month. I also forgot to take a photo of the Pixi lip balm in peach for my flatlay but I did take a pic of it on my lips.

I tried to theme the weeks into reds, berry’s, and nudes because those are the categories I wear the most often. I wanted to do this experiment because lipstick is very difficult to use up when you have a lot of them. I really wanted to challenge myself to wear a different lipstick every day instead of the same 4-5 I rotate through on the weekly. To be honest I did this to determine if there are any lipsticks I should declutter but I did use a lot of tinted lip balms which are my absolute favorite to wear to work so none of those will be decluttered. That was a bit of a blunder on my part. I have learned that while I love super bold lipsticks, I prefer ones that I can simply slap on with no mirror and know it is going to look semi alright. That is why I love the Burt’s Bees lipsticks and balms, as well as the CoverGirl sultry sienna nude lipstick because they are so easy to wear.

The first couple of weeks were more subtle nudes, the Marcelle Velour Liquid lipsticks, Mac See Sheer (a beautiful sheer pink) and other rose nudes. The second half of the month floated more into my reds, darker berries, and mauve shades. Mauve shades are something I used to wear ALL the time.

What have I learned

I love wearing bold lipsticks but with a blotted effect. For example, with Bite Beauty Beetroot, I didn’t wear it to it’s fullest opacity because I was at work. While I easily could have, it just felt right to pare it down a bit. I am trying to rotate through my entire collection and lipsticks are by far one of the largest parts of it. I love buying and trying new formulas, but lately, since I’m working an 8:30-4:30 job I’ve found that I pick a few standard ones and use those during the week and my “fun” shades get left behind. I want to continue to try and wear fun and bold shades (not a red as my Burt’s Bees Scarlet Soaked is my most favourite low maintenance red) like my dark berries and brighter pinks. Also, I have an affinity for rosy, beige nudes and it shows. Below are the lipsticks I wore every day in order!

What is your favourite type of lipstick?

Covergirl Favourites

Covergirl, the first mass drugstore brand I ever used. I remember my mom giving me a Covergirl mascara and BB Cream every year. I remember loving the Natureluxe foundation when I was in grade 11. This didn’t match my skin all but I thought I was such a classy adult lady wearing my Covergirl foundation housed in that sleek green tube. I went away from Covergirl for a while, but since they rebranded and became leaping bunny certified I’ve been playing with more than just their eyeshadows. I distinctly remember their blushes, they were the quintessential figure skating blush, that powdery smell and small horizontal pan with the ineffective brush. Ah, nostalgia. Since Covergirl is such a nostalgic brand I wanted to round up a few of my personal favourites from the brand.

Covergirl Eyeshadow Palettes

I recently finished the Nudes Palette and am now working on the Roses palette. This is the old packaging and formulation but nonetheless, these are such good classic eyeshadows. These purples and rose shades are my jam. This palette claims to perform just as well as it’s $50 counterpart but I don’t find this similar to the Urban Decay Naked 3 at all. This is a more purple based palette than the Urban Decay Naked 3 which is a more rose-pink based palette. These shadows are quite soft and not actually very pigmented. In my experience, I like a less pigmented shadow for an everyday look.

Covergirl Highlighter Palette

These highlighters are beautiful. They give a beautiful sheen that isn’t metallic. These are also rather soft powders. I predict the powders in this palette will be a bit more simple to hit pan on than others that are more hard-pressed. While this highlighter is slightly more powdery, this is a great option if like me you are into highlighters and highlighter palettes. I would also eventually like to try their other palette with the blushes and bronzers to see how that formula works as well!

Covergirl lip products

Covergirl lipsticks, red tube containing succulent cherry, brown beige tube containing sultry sienna, pink tube is the oh sugar tinted lip balm
Swatches of punch, sultry sienna, and succulent cherry
Oh Sugar tinted lip balm in Punch, Sultry Sienna, Succulent Cherry

I truly love CoverGirl lip products. They are comparable to high-end lip products and have a ton of shades for an affordable price. I love Sultry Sienna, thanks to Jamiepaigebeauty. I also love their oh sugar tinted lip balms. These lipsticks do have a slight scent that is similar to the MAC Lustre lipsticks. If you have a Covergirl lipstick you will know the scent I’m talking about. The Covergirl tinted lip balms, on the other hand, have a more fruity scent but not a sickly fruit scent. I would love more colors eventually but I’m trying hard to not buy any lipsticks this year.

The wildcard

The eyeshadow primer is quite good. It is on the same level as the Milani one. This is really sticky which is nice because your shadows will stick to it, I can’t speak on this as an alternative to high-end eyeshadow primers because I haven’t tried any but I can tell you this is an effective primer. My eyeshadow doesn’t crease and still looks vibrant at the end of the day, which is a big win for me because my eyelids are the only oily part of my face.

Day 9 of 12 Days of Blogging: Drugstore Holiday Makeup Look

I wanted to do a drugstore holiday makeup look for you! Featuring a lot or Rimmel which was unintentional but for some reason I just had a lot of Rimmel on hand, and have been really enjoying their products.

I started with the eyes, as per usual if I’m doing a smokier look. I started with the third shade from the left as a transition in my crease. After that I went in with the next shade over  – the more true pink to add a bit more depth. Then I went in with the 10th shade in the palette – the more darker pink cherry shade to add depth on the outer corner. Then I did a bit of shimmer action with the first and eighth shade  for some shimmer on the lid and the inner corner. I then put 20,000 coats of the L’Oreal Lash paradise mascara on.

The face I kept quite simple using the Rimmel breathable foundation and a mixture of the Collection lasting perfection concealer and the Annabelle concealer under the eyes. I used the Physicians Formula butter bronzer, blush and highlighter for all my glowiness.

I like this look because it’s a bit of a different take on the classic red lip and winged liner (mostly because I cannot do winged liner). I liked the cherry trend that’s going on, well I mean who am I kidding I love the warm tones but this palette seemed like such a good steal and had a similar vibe to the naked cherry so I wanted to do a look for you. I also think the formula of this palette is really great. It has minimal fall out and blends out rather nicely.

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

I wanted to give you two lip options. The first is a nude the Revlon kiss plumping lip cream in 510 nude honey that I would wear to Christmas dinner or what have you and the second is the Covergirl Succulent Cherry.

What did you wear for the holidays this season?

Drugstore Highlighter Round up

The Instagram wanted a highlighter round up so here I am, doing a highlighter round up. I have rounded up all my drugstore powder highlighters (because I’m going to do a cream post later on) for you. There are not many standards I have for a highlighters as I basically like all of them. Metallic, glossy, satin, subtle you name it.

Maybelline

The Maybelline master chrome highlighter is one of the most beautiful highlighters I have ever experienced. Period. Not just “for drugstore”. It can be applied with a brush or with a finger and if its blended into the skin it can give a less metallic look. Its creamy and buildable. I think that if you want a highlighter that has the same popping metallic sheen (not glittery) as Champagne pop this is the highlighter for you.

Covergirl

The Covergirl highlighter palette in “It’s Lit”.  This is a beautiful palette. The highlighters aren’t quite as bright as the Maybelline but they are buildable. They colours are all great for my skin tone and they do have a darker palette. I really like this. It is more on the powdery side but I find on the skin it doesn’t come across as that “powdery” cakey look.

Joe Fresh

This highlighter is the most beautiful subtle light champagne shade. It does kick up quite a bit of powder, but on the skin it gives a nice inner glow vibe. The drawback is there is only two shades. This highlighter gives off a subtle glow so if you are a beginner with highlight this is a good one to go with.

Essence

Similar to the Joe Fresh highlighter this one gives a nice sheen as well. It’s more of a subtle nude highlighter but on the cheek gives a nice glow without being glittery. I would say this highlighter has almost a peachy undertone to it and gives a nice “nude glow” as the name might suggest. This is also only $5 so is a steal!

Annabelle

The Annabelle perfect glow highlighters are the hidden gems of the Canadian drugstore. These are smooth and buttery and look beautiful on the skin. It gives a nice glow without being chunky and rivals some of its higher end counterparts.

ELF pressed highlighter in starlight glow

This highlighter is a beautiful. It gives a nice subtle sheen and can be built up to be a popping highlight. There are a ton of shades and the formula is smooth and easy to work with.

Wet n wild

Perhaps the most chunky highlight of the bunch. Don’t get me wrong – this is a great highlighter but of all of them this is the most high shine metallic one that has that initial chunky application. However, personally this isn’t a highlighter that I don’t gravitate towards as much as others, however it is a nice formula and I recommend this if you want a super high shine highlighter.

ELF baked highlighter

I have recently rediscovered this highlighter. I love that it gives a nice subtle glow. It has a beautiful sheen without being glittery.

What is the main difference that I see between high end and drugstore highlighters? The lasting power. Some of these – like th ELF baked highlighter fad quite quickly despite using a setting spray. However, the covergirl and maybelline I find have the best lasting power (at least on my skin) of all the highlighters I mentioned.

The Fall Favourites Tag

I’m not cool enough to actually be tagged so whoever is reading this, I tag you! I wanted to do another tag post because I rather enjoy thinking about what my true favourites and curating them in a post. I also, like a basic person, love fall and the fall season into the holiday season is just my jam. Enjoy my fall favourites!

Forest Glen candle co (1)

Forest Glen Candle Co

Favourite fall candle: this was a hard one because while I’m such a fan of Bath and Body works candles, there is a local candle co in my town, Forest Glen Candle co. The three scents I love that the owner came out with for fall are  Apple Cider Donut, Pumpkin Pecan Waffles, and Pumpkin spice latte. They are made with clean ingredients and burn beautifully. They also fill your whole house with a scent not just one area which is one of my favourite things about them. Highly Recommend! Check out their instagram here.

Favourite Lipstick shade

Favourite lip colour. This one was a bit of a difficult one for me because as you might have seen from my makeup stash Fridays post I have a lot of options. But for me the OG and still one of my favourite colours is the NYX Soft Matte Lip cream in prague for a berry shade and Burt’s Bees Suede Splash for a dark nude and of course my rotating favourite MAC See sheer. I also wanted to throw in a new one to my collection (THANKS JAMIEPAIGEBEAUTY) the Covergirl lipstick in  Sultry Sienna.

Favourite drink. This is a bit of toughie because I do like a lot of drinks. Other than pumpkin spice lattes, a nice hot cup of earl grey or cinnamon tea are my two favourite drinks during the fall season.

PF Butter Blush

PF butter blush close

hourglass palette

Favourite blush. Again, as you might have read in my makeup stash Fridays post, my blush stash is quite extensive. Currently, I really love the Physicians formula butter blush in vintage rouge and the two blushes in the Hourglass Ambient lighting edit from 2016 (forgot to take a pic so here’s one I had from a previous post). I like to glow during all seasons and both blushes have a similar effect to the skin.

Favourite fall movie. I don’t watch a lot of movies but I think my most favourite fall movie are any of those cheesy W films that are unrealistic rom coms.

brooklynn 99

Favourite fall tv show. Brooklyn 99 HANDS DOWN. I know that you can watch any show you want to watch all year round, but I just love me a good comedy for the fall season and Brooklyn 99 always gets it right.

Favourite Halloween costume. I was never a big Halloween person but my favourite costume was when I was George from the Aristocats and i have to say, the costume worked out quite nicely. Other than that I was literally a polar bear for like 4 years as a child than a witch for two so that wasn’t quite my thing growing up. The holidays on the other hand, that’s my jam.

What are your fall favourites?!

Project pan update the second

Ah the second update is upon us. I am so excited to share my progress with you! I also wanted to clarify the project pan concept. Basically, there are items I want to use up but that doesn’t mean I am not going to add items into makeup wardrobe while participating in a project pan. It just means I’m going to be more thoughtful then I used to when purchasing products. For example, I have added a few things since starting but not nearly as much as I last year. For eyeshadow palettes, I only want to add 4 into my collection in 2018 and I already have added 3 so far and love them! Also forgive me, I forgot to photograph my 100% Pure lip caramel in truffle but it is definitely being used up as I can see in the tube more from the outside. This lives in my purse and work bag and I used it everyday.

The thing I am most excited about: I finished my Pur disappearing act concealer which you may have seen in my previous empties post. I am so excited this honestly took a year to finish. Granted, I switched between this and other concealers but when I started the project I focused on it. In honour of this, I am rolling in two concealers, my Wet n Wild photo focus one (found this at superstore for all the Canadians out there) and my Nudestix concealer pencil in light 2 which admittedly is almost done but I am gonna focus on it.

Colourpop Highlighter Lunch moneyButter-bronzer

The next thing I am excited about: I fricken hit pan on the butter bronzer! I can’t believe it I have had this for about two years. Granted, I did switch between bronzers last year but I really wanted to focus on this one because I have had it for so long. Fun fact: this was my very first bronzer ever, other than those Revlon shimmer strip things which technically was my first one but this was my first ever REAL bronzer. I know, crazy. I got it summer 2016, courtesy of my dad and I finally hit pan. I actually jumped for joy when this happened.

My Colourpop highlighter. Again, got this in 2016 with my BFF. I used it on and off but at first was really confused on how to us it. Now I just used my fingers and really blend it in. I think the pan has slightly expanded compared to the last update which is exciting because it is getting older and I want to use it up!

Covergirl Nudes Palette

The Covergirl Nudes. Frankly, I am getting a bit bored with this palette and honestly haven’t really been using as much as I could. I definitely have expanded the pans quite a bit compared to the last update but I am really excited to use this up finally because I love me a good nude palette, but once I got the Anastasia palette and of course my Urban Decay Naked heat  that I got in December, my Covergirl palette has taken a back. I also find myself  gravitating towards those two palettes or my Colourpop singles. But I’m glad this is in my project because otherwise I might just neglect it all together!

NYX Dark Circle corrector

My NYX dark circle corrector. Omg, I have actually used so much of this and I’m so happy! It kind of broke as I started using it more but it is really effective, when I am looking tired I used this, the Nudestix and then the wet n wild concealer (I know its a bit extra but I love the combination) and I look super awake.

Are you doing a project pan? Let me know your progress!

Project Pan update

I’m so excited for my first project pan update. I’m so excited to share my progress. My last post I said that I had too many shades of blushes, and as I was looking at the stuff I bought, tried once, I thought; it’s time to give this to a friend. These products are amazing, but just not the right colour or just products I don’t truly need. Hence, my need to do this project and force myself to shop my stash! I hope you enjoy reading through the progress I’ve made! IMG_0868.jpg

Covergirl nudes: I have made so much progress on this. I have hit pan on my dark brown shade (been using that as a brow powder) and then my sparkly white shade for my brow bone colour. This is the one where visibly you can see I have actually made progess.

Colourpop lunch money highlighter (pictured below): the pan has expanded. Not by much but it has expanded and I’m so happy to see this. I use this literally everywhere that I want to highlight.

IMG_0865.jpgMy Pur Potted concealer: again, the metal part has expanded and I’m so happy to be done this. When I’m done this I have two other concealers to use up.

My 100% Pure lip caramel: I can’t really tell the progress on this one but I think it’s pretty good. I wear it pretty much every day and am starting to see the glass inside which is a good sign.  Not gonna lie, I forgot about my Mac lip liner in Oak….I keep forgetting to use it and misplacing it.

Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer: I don’t know? As I said before this is a never ending bronzer and I don’t think I have made a dent. This is literally the never ending bronzer.

IMG_0866.jpgThe NYX dark circle corrector: this wasn’t something that I used everyday leading up to this update but I have been trying to use it. However, I find it can be really difficult to use because I have got such a dent in it already getting my finger in there has been a doozy.

Thus far I have learned that this is a really good thing to keep me focused and second guessing myself when I see that drugstore lippie that I heard Rachhloves talking about but I know I have 4 similar shades sitting at home. I know that may seem like common sense to all of you cool folks, but for me this is something that is significant. We are always trying to find that “perfect” something and I think that can get really consumerist and make us lose sight of why we fell in love with beauty in the first place.

What have you used up lately?

Using up the makeups

Recently I have been thinking about the ingredients in my makeup, and how I don’t even fully use all the makeup I own. A lot of it I bought was because of hype, because I wanted to try it, because I thought I needed five million different shades of blush. That being said, I have whittled down my lipstick collection significantly, but have realized that I don’t take much thought when it comes to buying makeup, drugstore makeup specifically. Higher end makeup I generally put in a lot more thought to buying because of its price. Which got me thinking, why don’t I treat all purchases like this? So I’m going to try an experiment. You may have seen this floating around the inter webs but I’m going to try and hit pan on the following products. Hopefully by the end of 2018 (which is a generous timeline) but I am committed to finishing up products to then replace them with healthier versions. I may add more products as I go but for now enjoy my project pan goals!

My first one is the Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer. THIS IS A NEVER ENDING BRONZER. The problem is I have had this for since summer 2016 (I know my memory serves me in this but somehow not on exams) and its the light bronzer version, which is unfortunate because then it’s too light in the summer. But I think I can do it.

The Colourpop highlighter in lunch money. I have also had this since 2016 and I have hit pan on it so I must complete it.

My Covergirl nudes palette: I have already hit pan on 4 of the shades so I think it will be easy to do.  This palette is surprisingly really easy to hit pant on as well. The shadows are very soft so I think that might be why it’s so easy to use up.

My 100% Pure lip caramel. I want to use this up mainly because its made from fruit pigments and clean ingredients so I would like to try to use this up. Its also a beautiful darker nude and matches everything.

My Mac lip liner in Oak. I have had this since 2015 and since I want to transition to more clean beauty I just want to use this one up because it’s a nice easy nude lip liner and wears nicely under all my nude lip colours.

My PUR potted concealer. This is probably the best concealer I have ever tried, it was a bit pricey but also its just so easy to use. I have hit pan on it and I have had it since April 2017 so I have actually been using it up quite nicely.

NYX dark circle corrector. I think I have this since Sept 2016?  I do like this product and have used up quite a bit of it.

What are your makeup goals for this year?
