Updated Underrated Drugstore Products

Flatlay - clockwise from the left: Burt's Bees Tahitian sunset, Joe Fresh powder lip product, Joe Fresh concealer, Physicians formula butter highlighter, Annabelle Chrome eyeshadow in rose gold, Annabelle bouncy eyeshadow in booty shake.

Last year around this time I did an underrated products at the drugstore post. I outlined some of the products I think need some more love in the community and I stand true to that now. I have actually decided to part with almost all of the items in that post purely because they just weren’t getting the use they deserve in my collection. They are still underrated and I highly recommend them but they are kind of like those jeans I wear sometimes, but not enough to justify owning anymore.  I do think though, that as I have progressed both financially and my makeup style has changed as well as my skin has changed, I do find myself gravitating towards brands that are mid range to high end or the more expensive drugstore brands like Burt’s Bees and Physicians Formula. In any case, by the poll I did on my Instagram you all wanted to see an updated underrated drugstore products

Annabelle chrome eyeshadow and Annabelle bouncy eyeshadow

Rose Gold, Bouncy Eyeshadow Booty Shake

Annabelle has always been one of my favourite underrated and Canadian brands at the drugstore. They have a ton of amazing stuff in their line. Highlighters, blushes, bronzers. I wanted to highlight their eyeshadows. I have their pressed, bouncy, and metallic ones. I photographed their new bouncy eyeshadow and their metallic chrome ones. They are very different in formula. The Chrome eyeshadows have a bit of a stickier (not in a bad way) texture while the bouncy eyeshadows are literally bouncy feeling. Similar to Colourpop super shock shadows but a bit more creamy.

Joe Fresh Concealer
Joe Fresh Concealer swatch on arm

Another Canadian brand, Joe Fresh. The Joe Fresh illuminating concealer was something I decluttered originally… then repurchased and fell in love. I thought it made my under eyes look dry but at the time I bought this I didn’t really know what I was doing with makeup. Now, when I use this I find it blends out beautifully and is rather lighter coverage, but makes you look awake.

Joe Fresh Matte lip stick and Burt's Bees Glossy lipstick
Swatches of Lip products. Joe Fresh powder matte and Burt's bees tahitian sunset

Two lip products. The Burt’s bees glossy lip pencils. The only person I saw use this is Racchhloves, quite a few years ago when I was just getting into the beauty space on youtube. So naturally, I went out and bought three shades. And naturally, I still wear them all the time. They make your lips feel moisturized and have a good variety of colours. I also wanted to throw in the Joe Fresh Power lipstick. This is such a good lip product. It is right on trend with the blotted lips we are seeing everywhere and again, it’s only available in Canada. I really like the shade of this and how easy these are to wear. This does have a matte powdery finish but I don’t find it dries my lip out.

Physicians Formula Butter highlighter
swatch of highlighter

The Physicians Formula butter highlighters. I suppose this line, in general, isn’t underrated but I find this product, in general, had its moment and then went by the wayside. There are definitely a ton of videos on YouTube when you search them, but I just don’t see anyone really using this like they use the Butter Bronzer in the same line. I think that these are some of the nicest satin highlighters out there, drugstore or not. The shade range isn’t as big so I hope they expand it because this highlighter is the perfect highlighter when you want that lit from within glow but can be built up to be brighter.

February lip challenge: A recap

A very popular “trend” right now in the beauty community is a buy less mentality, particularly in the project pan community where the goal is to use and love your collection. The goal is also to shop your stash and realize that you don’t need the new shiny thing. I am not good at this (shameless haul plug here) but I am trying to strike that balance of new products and the being more creative with my blog posts by using makeup I already have, curating more lists and doing more in-depth reviews on products. For the month of February, I wanted to do a wee experiment with my obscene lipstick collection. If you follow me on Instagram I posted on my stories or my grid each day showing what lipstick I chose

In January I went through my lipsticks and picked ones that I wear often, and the ones that I never wear (looking at you Marcelle velour liquid lipsticks that I bought in July). I created an excel document and wrote down all the lipsticks I wanted to wear for the month. I also forgot to take a photo of the Pixi lip balm in peach for my flatlay but I did take a pic of it on my lips.

I tried to theme the weeks into reds, berry’s, and nudes because those are the categories I wear the most often. I wanted to do this experiment because lipstick is very difficult to use up when you have a lot of them. I really wanted to challenge myself to wear a different lipstick every day instead of the same 4-5 I rotate through on the weekly. To be honest I did this to determine if there are any lipsticks I should declutter but I did use a lot of tinted lip balms which are my absolute favorite to wear to work so none of those will be decluttered. That was a bit of a blunder on my part. I have learned that while I love super bold lipsticks, I prefer ones that I can simply slap on with no mirror and know it is going to look semi alright. That is why I love the Burt’s Bees lipsticks and balms, as well as the CoverGirl sultry sienna nude lipstick because they are so easy to wear.

The first couple of weeks were more subtle nudes, the Marcelle Velour Liquid lipsticks, Mac See Sheer (a beautiful sheer pink) and other rose nudes. The second half of the month floated more into my reds, darker berries, and mauve shades. Mauve shades are something I used to wear ALL the time.

What have I learned

I love wearing bold lipsticks but with a blotted effect. For example, with Bite Beauty Beetroot, I didn’t wear it to it’s fullest opacity because I was at work. While I easily could have, it just felt right to pare it down a bit. I am trying to rotate through my entire collection and lipsticks are by far one of the largest parts of it. I love buying and trying new formulas, but lately, since I’m working an 8:30-4:30 job I’ve found that I pick a few standard ones and use those during the week and my “fun” shades get left behind. I want to continue to try and wear fun and bold shades (not a red as my Burt’s Bees Scarlet Soaked is my most favourite low maintenance red) like my dark berries and brighter pinks. Also, I have an affinity for rosy, beige nudes and it shows. Below are the lipsticks I wore every day in order!

What is your favourite type of lipstick?

12 Days of Blogging Day 4: Brands I want to Try in 2019

I know that I am not the type of person to go on a year long no buy, but I also want to make better decisions about my purchases. I wanted to do a post outlining some brands I want to try in 2019. I think this will be a nice reference point for me, first so that I can try new things, but second, that I won’t just willy nilly buy things (drugstore products looking at you) but items that I’ve really been eyeing for awhile. You will notice there are a few luxury brands in here that I might not get to but I wanted to put on this list. I also got this idea from Samantha March who I saw do this type of video but I’m not sure who invented the idea!

Charlotte Tilbury

I have been eyeing this brand for so long. It just became easily accessible in Canada this year. I want to try a few items from this brand, mostly the filmstar bronze and glow and the Hollywood Flawless filter. While Charlotte herself sleeps in makeup – not sure how I feel about this, however I like that the brand’s ethos is making you feel confident. This can be seen as preying on our insecurities that we need to be perfect, however at the same time she is unapologetically sexy which I think is powerful in its own right.

Cheekbone Beauty

This is an amazing Canadian brand founded by an Indigenous woman named Jenn Harper. Their liquid lipsticks are the star of show according the chatter in the beauty sphere, so I’d definitely like to try a few of those along with their highlighter palette (cause who can resist a face palette, not this kid). Harper’s personal journey and makeup story is poignant. The brand supports the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada which I think is even more reason to support the brand. I first heard about this brand on the Breaking Beauty Podcast so if you want to listen to that I urge you to download it!

Kosas cosmetics

I have also been eyeing this brand for awhile but never took the plunge. Kosas is a clean beauty brand and according to their website formulates their products with prestige ingredients. The philosophy is integrated layers of self which I can get down with. I want to specifically try their tinted face oil, lipstick and the cream blush/highlighter duos.

Glossier

I’m a bit late to the game, but I really do want to foray into the glossier world. I would like to try their makeup and skincare. They do some good sets so if I do end up ordering from them I will likely get a few of those. I enjoy the brand’s ethos, however I recognize that it’s quite elitist and exclusionary to many folks who just can’t use their products for one reason or another. Again, I’m not sure if this is one I will actually get around to, but it’s on my list.

Tom Ford

I know. Wtf. why is this on my list? I don’t know either to be honest. But I love ttsandra, she is such a classy cool lady and she is always using Tom Ford Nude Dip and Cocoa Mirage  eye shadow quads and has talked about the Tom Ford Foundation stick. So listen, I get it. These are two overpriced mofos. But for some reason, as I foray into the adult world and ideally I will have a full time job by the time I plan to buy these items, I think this would be a good treat yo self brand to get. These will also be VIB buys I think.

I wanted to do this post because I honestly think this will help me curb impulsive makeup buying. I tend to do that especially with drugstore and I think having an idea at the beginning of the year of what I want to buy will be a lot more helpful than just randomly going along and buying what I want. This isn’t to say I won’t buy other things but I want to try to curb my spending and limit additions to my collection that don’t bring it any value and don’t bring me the joy they should.

What brands do you want to try in 2019?

*disclaimer: none of these photos are mine, I have taken them from the individual brand website, or the google, or sephora.com*

12 Days of Blogging Day 3: My Favourite Red Lipsticks

I love red lipstick. Unfortunately, because of my allergies I find myself not wearing if very often. BUT during the holiday season I tend to wear it a bit more often than usual and I wanted to outline a few of my favourite red lipsticks I have in my collection.

The warm red

Covergirl Succulent Cherry

Covergirl Succulent Cherry, it’s a nice warm red with a hint of orange. It’s a more low maintenance red with a slightly shiny finish. I like this lipstick because it doesn’t overpower you and can be worn in an office environment. I wouldn’t wear this for Christmas dinner due to it’s creamy nature, but for a day red or a Christmas party red this is a go to for me (lol not that I attend any Christmas parties).

The blue red

Wet n wild Spotlight Red

The Wet n wild lipstick in Spotlight red has survived quite a few of my declutters. This lipstick is super affordable and gives intense colour payoff. This is also a long lasting lipstick so I feel safe to wear this when I’m eating, drinking etc without worrying about it. Bonus it makes your teeth look nice and white.

The bright red

Bite Beauty Cayenne is described as a bright red. I love this lipstick. I really like bite beauty lipsticks, if I had to pick this formula and the Burt’s Bees formula are my all time favourite lipstick formulas. This has a beautiful opaque finish in one swipe. It instantly brightens up any look and I absolutely loves the smell of it.

Bite Beauty Cayenne

The low maintenance red

Burt’s Bees Scarlet Soaked

Burt’s Bees Scarlet Soaked is possibly one of my most favourite reds. I find that it is the most low maintenance red you could have. You can blend it out to be a nice stain or have it to it’s full opacity. It is also easily fixable if it fades you can just press your lips together and it goes back to normal.

The liquid lip

Stila Beso

The Stila Liquid lipsticks are a great liquid lip formula, the only one that I really own. The shade beso is such an amazing true red and isn’t too matte. It fades beautiful into a stain like finish after you have eaten and drank anything. This is the only liquid lipstick other than the NYX soft matte lip creams that I have kept in my collection.

What is your favourite red lipstick?

Makeup Stash Fridays: Fall Lipsticks

I have been wanting to do one of these types of post for awhile. If you have been around the beauty YouTube space there used to be videos called my makeup stash where people would go through their collections and showcase their stashes in different categories. I wanted to start a similar series but for seasons. So for every category of makeup I’m going to do a “stash” for that season. I am also going to attempt to do this every Friday hence the title “Makeup Stash Fridays”. For today, I’m going to do the lipsticks that I’m going to use for the fall season, excluding my project pan lipsticks the Joe Fresh Lip balm, 100% Pure Lip caramel in Truffle and the Milani Lipstick in Nude Creme. So every Friday look out for a post like this one!

The Berries

From Left to right: NYX Prague, Colourpop Blotted lipstick in Bees knees, ELF liquid lipstick in Berry Sorbet, Bite Beauty Beetroot

First, as we typically think of fall we have the berry shades.  My first most used and oldest fall shade is the classic NYX soft matte lip cream Prague. It’s a beautiful pinky berry shade and smells like vanilla. It almost has a blotted lip look and despite the name its not drying on the lips. These all come in a load of shades. The next one that is very similar is the Colourpop blotted lipstick (also please someone tell me are these discontinued because I cannot find them on their site). This is a very similar shade to the NYX – a perfect fushia pink berry. Next is a classic ELF liquid lipstick in Berry Sorbet. It’s a darker more purple berry then the previous ones and have a nice soft matte finish. Finally my most expensive option of the bunch the Bite Beauty Amuse bouche lipstick in beetroot. I bought this because of ttsandra on YouTube and it’s the perfect bold berry shade.

The brown nudes with a hint of rose

Left-Right: Bite Beauty Honeycomb, Wet n Wild Bare it All, Burt’s Bees Suede Splash, Bite Beauty Chai,, Bite Beauty Rhubarb, Mineral Fusion Adorn

I love me a good solid nude lipstick, borderline too much beige with a hint of rose. First up we have my tried and true favourite lipstick shade Lush Perspective (sadly no longer available). It’s a beautiful rose toned liquefied lipstick that is the perfect your lips but better shade. Next are two similar friends, the Wet n wild lipstick in Bare it All that seems to get through all my declutterers and its glossier counterpart the Burt’s Bees lipstick in suede splash. Both are beige nude shades with a just enough of a pink undertone to still look good against my fair skin. The three Bite Beauty shades we have are the mini chai shade which is a mauve brown shade and honeycomb which is a true beige nude, one I like to mix with another more pink shade. Then we have the shade rhubarb which is a dark plum rose shade. Finally a glossy true brown options is the mineral fusion sheer moisture lip tint in adorn.

The pinks and reds

red toned lippies

Left to Right: Bite Beauty Sugarcane, Burt’s Bees Tahitian Sunset, MAC See Sheer, Burt’s Bees Scarlet Soaked, Nudestix Sin

I only have a few (you guessed) rosy red shades for this category. Of course if you follow me on instagram you know I love MAC see Sheer. It is described as a grapefruit pink but I think on my lips it definitely feels like a pink red you wear when you don’t want to fuss with a red lip. The no fuss red lip I like is the Burts Bees lipstick in Scarlet soaked. I find you can build this up to full opacity or just blot it on over a lip balm. Next is the Burt’s Bees glossy lip crayon in Tahitian Sunset alongside its cooler toned counterpart the Nudestix lip and cheek pencil in Sin. I also didn’t have a place for this one colour wise but I’m trying to use the Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche lipstick in sugarcane which is a true pastel pink so I’m attempting to use it as a mixing shade.

The easy glosses

glossy-lips

Left to right: Fenty Gloss Bomb, ELF gotta glow lip tint in Perfect Pink

The two glossy sheer lip products I have are the Fenty Gloss bomb in Fenty Glow. This lip gloss literally makes your lips look like glass. It can be worn on its own and over any lipstick. Next is something that I didn’t realize how much I used until I looked at the bullet and that’s the ELF cosmetics beautifully bare gotta glow lip tint in perfect pink. It is the perfect lip tint to throw in your purse and use on your daily errands.

What is in your fall lipstick stash?

Are MAC Lipsticks worth it?

The age old question, are MAC cosmetics lipsticks worth it? In the YouTube and beauty blogging space MAC was such a thing at the beginning times. Everyone had a “my favourite MAC lipsticks” video and a “MAC products you need”. I personally have had a few MAC products before including their lip liner in Strip down and their brown pencil in fling. I broke down during the Sephora sale and bought two MAC products, their sheer tone blush in peach twist and a lustre lipstick in See Sheer (thanks Sam Ravndahl).

From left to right: MAC See Sheer, Marcelle Delirium, Pixi Natural Rose, Mineral Fusion Flicker, Burt’s Bees Rose Falls, Burt’s Bee’s Suede Splash, Bite Beauty Beet Root

The science experiment we are doing today is answering the question: Are MAC lipsticks worth it? First I will tell you what I look for in a lipstick. In general I have been liking more sheer and cream formulas while I used to love super matte liquid lipsticks, hence the lustre formula. I like a buildable colour but for bold lip shades I do prefer more of a matte finish.

Okay so first the smell of MAC lipsticks are iconic. They kind of smell like a light vanilla scent mixed with something else sweet that I can’t put my finger on. They actually smell extremely similar to the Pixi Shea butter lip balms and even both have the same sheer buildable coverage on the lips. As you can see, I have been hunting for alternatives (I don’t want to say dupe because these options aren’t exactly dupes) so I’m calling these lip products alternatives.

romanesque_ps

pixi.jpg

First up, the closest dupe in formula and application the Marcelle Rouge Xpression Lipstick in delirium in the pearl finish (not a colour alternative, this colour isn’t available anymore but they have a lot of pearl finish lipsticks). While these don’t go on as sheerly they give the same glossy effect as the Lustre formula and you can put them on without a mirror. Second, the Pixi shea butter lip balms. These lip balms are closest in smell but are actually a bit more pigmented upon application and a bit more matte than the Lustre formula. If you want a good cruelty free alternative these are a good one to try.

mineral fusion

For a third alternative I would say the Mineral Fusion sheer moisture lip tint are a close second for formula. They have a mint scent but have that same sheer to full colour application as the MAC. They tick all the boxes but as with all of these alternatives do not come in a wide variety of shades. You can apply these without a mirror which is one of my favourite things when it comes to lipstick.

burts bees glossyburts bees satin

The fourth alternative I have for you today is the Burt’s Bees Glossy Lipstick. Again this one doesn’t come in many shades. Again a beautiful sheer and glossy option that has buildable colour. I really like these lipsticks and they are a great drugstore alternative. The fifth is another Burt’s Bees lipstick in Suede Splash that is a satin formula and I would say has a similar application to the MAC but not as sheer and buildable.]

bite beauty

Finally the last alternative to the MAC lipstick line as a whole is Bite Beauty. Now if bite beauty came out with a sheer lipstick formula I would be all over that. They are all in general a matte-satin formula and smell so yummy. I put this one in this post because if you are again MAC then Bite Beauty will have great, clean, cruelty free options in their line.

MAC.jpg

Okay so what is my answer? Ya’ll I didn’t want to love See Sheer as much as I do… but I do. It’s easy to apply, it smells good, and it’s a good price. It’s not drugstore prices but in Canada it’s pretty damn close for some brands that are charging upwards of $16 for a lip product. I think that if you want a variety of shades, in beautiful colours, the MAC lipsticks are for you! All in all I’m giving this a 5/5!

Have you tried any MAC lipsticks? If so what are your favourites?!

Burts Bees Review

Recently, I have been noticing something (which is obvious but bare with me) when I use natural based products my skin itself is clear and doesn’t feel congested. When I purchased some fun products from the Burts Bees makeup line I noticed immediately an improvement on my cheek texture. Obviously I remove my makeup every night, partake in the double cleanse and have a skincare routine (which I am still trying to perfect). But, when using blushes like the Burts Bees bare peach that I will be talking about, I really enjoyed the effect and the evident way in which it improved my skin texture. Read on if you want a review of some of the Burts Bees makeup line! I know this old news in the beauty world but to me I think they are still worth reviewing!

Mascara, blush, foundation powder, lipstick

Bare Peach blush

The blush: this was what I was most excited for. Of course I wanted to toasted cinnamon but alas it was out of stock at the Walmart I was raiding so I decided to get bare peach. This blush is really nice. Its smooth and pigmented but not too pigmented. My only complaint is that it does fade throughout the day and essentially disappear. While some might think this is a bad thing I don’t mind because the makeup is absorbing into your skin, which means at least the ingredients are healthy and clean therefore I don’t feel like I’m ingesting odd chemicals.

Foundation powder

The foundation powder: This is the BEST powder I have tried for dry and dehydrated skin. I LOVE this powder. I used it as actual foundation one day and it didn’t make me look dry and cakey which other powders do (looking at you NYX). This is a great powder and I highly recommend it if you are in need of a clean, more affordable face powder.

mascara

glossy lipstick

The mascara: This really surprised me. I had seen some videos on it and people weren’t overly impressed. BUT I have also been searching for a clean mascara, and I think this is it. Dare I say this will be my new, for lack of a better term, holy grail mascara? It survived the rain, it survived an intense physio session where I sweat my butt off and it doesn’t irritate my eyes.

The glossy lipstick: These are moisturizing, pigmented and absolutely stunning on the lips. I love the smell, I love the sheen, I love the vibe. If you get anything from this post GET THIS. Any colour that suits your fancy, I highly recommend.

Have you tried any of the products yet?
