My Current makeup routine

Well with the school year in full swing I find myself a busy bee buzzing around my apartment, school, meetings, the gym/outdoors to run and training, I am finding my mornings a bit less free then they used to be. I thought I would do a bit of a different post and run you through my makeup routine as a busy student!

My makeup routine has changed slightly from last year. A) its been extremely hot here, like 38 degrees and I just can’t be bothered with foundation, so that shaves off quite a few minutes of my morning routine. B) I work and/or run in the morning and/or have class therefore I have been choosing that extra 10 mins of sleep instead of doing my typical bold eye shadow looks I did during the summer and also all last year.

I still love makeup. I love watching tutorials, doing smoky eyes and wearing bold lips but lately I have been going for bronzer in the crease and a light lip gloss or a tinted lip balm and of course highlighter (when am I not wearing highlighter)

I love this multi use palette by Hourglass (it cost me an arm and a leg and is also not available anymore) but it was totally worth it. I use it on my eyes and cheeks so it doubles as all the things. I have also been using a cream highlighter the one from the Body Shop mainly because I’m trying to use it up but also because its beautiful and melts into the skin quite nicely. I also use the gosh illuminating primer – to be honest I don’t see a whole lot of illumination from it but it does even out the skin quite nicely without feeling heavy at all on the skin.

I have then been loving this Pur concealer that doesn’t seem to crease or settle in fine lines. Its convenient and I also don’t need to set it which is one less step in the morning.

Eye products

As for eyes I used the same multi use palette and then throw the highlighter across the lid. After this I go in with my two brow gels (a bit excessive I realize). I love the Essence clear brow gel so far. I used to use their tinted one but for some reason I thought I would try this Annabelle one, however the brush is a bit big and the colour isn’t as precise as the Essence one so I’m going to use it up but likely repurchase the Essence make me brow. I also started foraying into natural based mascaras. This one pictured in the Physicians Formula organic wear mascara, it is a really good starter natural and organic mascara in terms of price and ingredients. I really like how it makes my lashes feel and how well it combs them out and fans them. It does smudge but not to an extent that I’m unhappy with it. I look forward to trying more mascaras from them! I was noticing using other mascaras my lashes were literally falling off so I thought, okay I want to do something about this. Really glad I made the switch.

Lippies

As for lips, its been a real lip balm, gloss or lip liner/lip balm combination. Easy peasy lemon squeezey. I have been loving that trendy, clear glossy look and the elf beautifully bare lip tint is right on trend – it changes colour with your pH and makes a custom pink lip shade. Who knows if it actually does that but I like the finish. I also recently purchased the Fenty Beauty lipgloss and its beautiful.

What is your go to school/busy time routine? What are you favourite products?

De-Stressing During Exams

HELLO HUMANS. I have seen on social media several people several stressing over exams and studying at all hours, and worrying about their marks so I wanted to do a blog post outlining a few ways that you can destress.

Find a hobby that is actually fun. No don’t go to the gym if that doesn’t make you happy like people tell you to do, try something else. Try colouring, trying reading a book (and a gasp because who reads for pleasure nowadays), or just try  a new fun makeup look! My personal fave hobby is the art of the crochet, currently I’m making a toque with a pompom. My other hobby is pool but you know since I don’t have a pool table the art of crochet will do.

Take a step away from studying. Okay, I get it many folks study ALL DAY for like 8 hours and need certain grades to get into certain programs. I mean if it works for you then by all means continue doing you but for me I find I do better on exams if I don’t study all day leading up to the days of the exam and all day before. Yes I am in a different, more concept based program, but I find that studying 2-3 hours a day and planning out which lectures I want to study makes me retain the knowledge better. So I suggest (obviously I’m not a professional) to take a step back from studying and also to take a look at the bigger picture. YES grades matter for many programs, but when you are older, and in an actual career its not going to matter if you got a 65 in a class, what is going to matter is that you actually learned something that you can apply to your future.

FaceTime your pet. Okay so not everyone has a pet they can FaceTime, some of you might be pet-less, others might have a pet at school with them (lucky butts).   But I find that FaceTiming my wee Buttons is so amazing, because her very virtual presence puts me at ease and I JUST LOVE HER SO MUCH. Again another picture of my cat.

Have a pamper night. I’m not going lie I have recently gotten very into face masks. I used to think they were a sham but honestly they are so relaxing. I did an at home facial recently and it was the best damn decision I made all week. I recently got the Freeman Dead Sea Minerals Anti-stress mask that is an amazing refreshing mask!

And remember fellow students, exams are not representative of your intelligence and your worth, you can get through this.

Week 5

So week five has come and gone. I started this week excited that it was FINALLY going to be November! Which means many assignments, upcoming finals but also one of two of my favourite things; Christmas decorating and finding the PERFECT gift for my loved ones.

Monday , Halloween. Yes I’m 90 and did not go out for Halloween because I was baking cookies and watching parks and rec. I had a decent run, it was quite a long run and also a really hot one. I’m not sure why Western’s gym is so hot and why they don’t turn on the ceiling fans but omg I was sweating from my fricken elbows folks.

Wednesday, yes we are finally in November. I cannot describe how exciting it is that this month is here. Sure, I have some assignments due to be completely honest I don’t let what marks I may or may not get impede my daily schedule. I used to make excuses as to why I couldn’t workout like “oh I have readings” or “oh I have a paper I need to start”. However, I’m trying to make running into habit that will help me with my future career. A habit much like one of the most relaxing parts of my day, doing my makeup. Anyway, this run was refreshingly short, but also kind of frustrating. My Nike app wasn’t working and my headphones had also broke so that was really frustrating, but alas I pushed through and finished.

Ah Saturday. I changed my day because I had quite a few things to do on Friday and an event at night, which was seeing Ivan Coyote speak about their experiences as trans person and was all around fabulous. Saturday was a warm day! I know…its November. There was some beautiful fall weather with 9-10 degrees for a few days then the weather just decided to go back to being what people call “nice”. Which I don’t fully disagree with, but I also would love to not be sweaty every time I wear a sweater, because I’m all about turtle necks so please weather I’m just asking for a bit of fall!  Anyway, this was a decent run, a few hurdles, the gym was so hot that I was having a hard time just because literally every part of me was pouring with sweat and there was absolutely no air flow. I finished and went home. I plan to start running outdoors at some point, so I look forward to the day when there is some sort of breeze!

Despite the hurdles, I am really happy that I have been keeping up this three days a week running schedule. I understand that for many people this may not seem like much but for me and running this is a lot. I used to run maybe once a week or month, and just give up. But it feels good to be sticking with a schedule and really being disciplined. I am also working on adding two days a week of strength rather then just one! Have a fabulous week and I do hope you also find a good sale on Werther’s soft chew caramels because they are the best.

Feminism growth

If you have read my earlier posts you would know that I didn’t claim to know about feminism as a whole and I was someone that learned about feminism through what they call “Internet Feminism” which included loving Taylor Swift and the like (not gonna lie I do still jam out to her music, she is one of my problematic faves).  However, in the past year and a bit I have been learning and growing as a feminist so I just wanted to update you.

Now that I have learned about intersectionality and am pursuing a women’s studies degree, my feminist perspective has grown and changed. While I still think equal pay is important something I’ve spoken about before, I now see that feminism beyond the dictionary definition. I have never taken a women’s studies course until last year and on the first day I learned so much, I would like to say I became “enlightened” as some might say. My feminist theory has grown and changed and I’m proud that it has. I think a large part of being a “good” feminist (whatever that actually means) is always growing, learning and listening to ALL perspectives of women from various different backgrounds and whom sit on various intersections of life.

If you happen read my old posts remain kind in your thoughts and just know that I come from a small town of 3000 people where my only education on feminism was the Internet . The beginning of my post secondary career was journalism and then a year of college where I was in a very general program that included no women’ studies as I was trying to figure out my life (when are we not doing that let’s be real). While the internet was a great start for me in my learning a very small shmiggle of feminism, I have learned so much which continues to form and change my perspectives on the world around me. That is what is so great about being a women’s studies major I LITERALLY (said in Chris Treager’s voice from Parks and Rec) learn something new every single time I step foot in my women’s studies classes and in the awesome feminist community of students I have discovered since switching universities.

The return

Well folks, it has been a hot minute since I have blogged. Mostly because of a lack of inspiration. But this year I decided I wanted to get back at it. So I am hoping to blog my journey of running among other fun and fabulous topics. Now you all know how I feel about running. However, I want to go into law enforcement (future Minister of Defence over here) and a large part of why I haven’t been writing is because this goal is something I was kind of scared to share here on my blog. I do not fit the typical mould of a cop, I am a small, non-aggressive, slightly radical feminist women’s studies major who strives to be intersectional and always understanding of all perspectives. Some people aren’t surprised when I say my goals but there are some than I can just tell there is in a bit of confusion in the “well that’s interesting” comment, questioning my use of my degree. But why can’t a women’s studies and criminology major (WS is my first love ya’ll) be a cop? Why not change this dominant thought of what a police officer should be and bring in a different skill set to the profession? Anyway that’s a whole other conversation. Moral of the story that’s why I started running again, for the first time consistently in five years. Also full disclaimer I have been exercising in other more fun, less loathing ways #kindoffit.

Week 1 of my walker to runner plan. I chose this walk to run plan because I didn’t want to get discouraged. Every summer I set out to run, but I go all in too quickly and get discouraged. So this year, in service of my future career I decided I would begin running, also my incentive is going to be rad luxury makeup product at the end of this 8 week plan (sorry mom).

Monday, Oct  3, also mean girls day. I had been recovering from a cold so I decided to start the whole plan over since I only got in 1 day the week before, thanks September cold. This run was the walk 2, run 1 for 21 minutes. I know, to you folk out there who are avid runners AND non asthmatics (which honestly can be a hindrance but thank goodness for inhalers) this may sound like nothing. Yes, I have ran 10KM before and it wasn’t bad. But to start out after 5 years of not running consistently, its hard to get back into. Anyhoo this day went well, again drenched in sweat because as soon as I move I swear like mamajammer.

Wednesday Oct 5. Not dead yet, woke up early because everyday is an early. I didn’t get a lot of sleep on Tuesday night but its okay! I got by, my highlight was on fleek all day and taking it off before running was kind of sad #makeupprobs. But this run went fine, I mean I wasn’t huffing and puffing, but it was okay. A walk 2 run 2 for 24 mins, upping the anti just a bit.

Friday Oct 7. Kind of dying, breathing heavy, legs and groin sore. The upside, I have mentally prepared myself for the hard days, where my asthma is bad because of weather, but where I can still get through the run. This day was a bit longer, a bit harder, 3 mins of running instead of 2. I am not going to lie, my little lungs were struggling for air (possibly because I forgot my inhaler at home, good job Chrisinda) and it was hard. However, I’m willing to keep going because the aim of this plan is to ease into running which is exactly what I need.

Here is the thing, this is a time in my life where I feel confident enough to not get discouraged and beat myself up about being a wee bit of a slow poke. I am going to keep on keeping on because that’s what I was taught to do (also makeup is my reward) and you all should keep on keeping on with what your doing. Until our next chat, enjoy your turkeys fellow Canadians.
