April Favourites Revisited

I have seen a few content creators do this type of post/video. I think that beautywithemilyfox was the first person I saw do this type of post. I wanted to revisit my favourites from a year ago (some of these are the same products) and see if I still like them and if I still use them. This is a good way, not only to see if my makeup taste has changed but also to see just how long products can last when you don’t use them as consistently as someone who only owns one highlighter and one foundation.

Thayers lavender toner

Thayers toner

This is still one of my favourite toners. I find that it is very gentle and has a lovely light lavender scent. I find that it keeps my skin hydrated and balances it quite nicely. It also keeps spots at bay.

NARS forte De France highlighter

NARS Highlighter

I still adore this highlighter. This was one of my first, other than the balm Mary Lou Manizer, high-end highlighters. I love how smooth the formula is and that as a powder, it looks glossy on the cheeks. It has not turned me into the Anna Edit yet but alas I love the glow it gives.

Caudalie essence

Caudalie Essence

This product has changed my skin. I love it. It is a gentle hydrating yet chemically exfoliating product. It has a lovely scent because of Caudalie’s iconic grape water that also adds that boost of hydration. I highly recommend this if you have sensitive skin and want a chemical exfoliant. I put some on my hands and then pat it into my skin.

Lush Karma perfume

This has been living in my travel bag/my purse, hence why it isn’t in the photos. I still love this scent. It is rather strong but doesn’t last all day so I can justify putting quite a bit on and then it usually fades by the time I come into contact with other humans. This is a patchouli based scent and is rather warm but also citrusy. This isn’t usually a scent I would go for but I do like warm scents and fresh scents. I would definitely get the spray once I run out of the solid!

Top shop jeans

Topshop jeans

Ah, the classic jeans. Friends, these no longer fit me. These are real, no stretch, 100% cotton jeans so I gained maybe an inch on my waist and they no longer do up! I still own them, not in hopes that I will lose weight, but because if I ever did I don’t have to buy new pairs … I know my mom would say “if you did lose weight you’d want new jeans” which might be true, but for me, these were such a staple in my wardrobe I can see them becoming a staple as I do more cardio and body weight workouts!

The Body Shop  Fresh Nude foundation

The Body Shop Fresh Nude Foundation

Since buying this last year it has become one of my holy grail foundations. It has a lovely satin finish and looks skin like on the skin. It builds very nicely but also looks lovely sheered out in an even layer. I tend to use half a pump and put it on the parts of my face that I feel need a bit of evening out. There definitely isn’t enough shades in this range. Selfishly I really like this because I have my shade and it doesn’t irritate my skin. I hope they come out with even more on the darker end of the scale because right now its a 50 shades of beige situation.

12 Days of Blogging Day 2: AM skincare routine

As you may or may not know, one of my goals of 2018 was to find a skincare routine that works. That meant that I would have to try and try different products. I think I have finally found a AM skincare routine that works for me. I also have a PM skincare routine I shared on Instagram (cheeky plug you should follow me) in the little highlights section. But I plan on doing a blog post about that later! The biggest question I get on the daily: is how is your skin so glowy. The answer is skincare! It sounds cliche but it’s true, I using hydrating products, I drink water, and most importantly I was blessed with pretty blemish free skin due to my genes.

Something that I stopped doing when I moved out and started uni was using a cleanser in the morning. Instead I bought an obscene amount of face cloths and I started using a warm cloth in the morning. I find that by doing this I’m not stripping my skin of any of it’s natural oils but again if you want to use a gentle cleanser in the morning go right ahead, it’s all about what works for your skin.

Next I used a toner. I have been loving the Thayers toner because it’s gentle balancing and hydrating. I use my hands with my toner, the K-beauty way. I usually squirt a bit into my hands and press it onto my face. After this I will spray my face with the Avene thermal water (which yes is a can of overpriced water

My next step is moisturizing. I use a lot of moisturizer. Like probably a bit too much. First I used about four pumps of my Neutrogena hydro boost serum and really press it into my skin. I will say, after using this serum for about 4 months my skin has greatly increased in hydration. I feel like when I don’t use this, I notice that my skin is a bit more dull. Again, this is personal preference but I like to use this every day morning and night. I don’t know if that’s too much but I do it!

After my hydrating serum I use a moisturizer. Usually about a pump and half of the Cerave moisturizing lotion. I’d like to try the cream as well as I’ve heard it’s a bit thicker and hydrating. The lotion is great for under makeup, it has hyaluronic acid and ceramides making it the perfect protector and hydrater in one.

What is your favourite skincare item?

Blune Day 23: The beauty Tag

I saw this tag floating around the blog world and didn’t actually get tagged, but I thought this was a fun post to do for day 23. It will allow you to learn a bit more about my beauty life!

Do you remember your first makeup item?  I think it was this PUR intro set that my mom bought me from the shopping channel

What kind of coverage do you prefer from a foundation? Super sheer to light, when I am having a bit of a day with my skin I will go more medium

Favourite high-end brand? Hourglass hands down. Its cruelty free and pledges to be vegan by 2020! I have never been disappointed by their products

What cosmetics brands have you always wanted to try but still haven’t?  RMS beauty. I always see the Living Luminizer and the Lip2cheeks but just haven’t taken the plunge.

Favourite drugstore brand? E.L.F because their products are always in my makeup bag. But I really love ColourPop (I know not a drugstore brand technically) but their prices are amazing and the quality is comparable to high end.

Do you wear false lashes? Only for skating!

Is there any kind of makeup you can’t leave the house without? Hmmmmmmmm I don’t know how to answer this. I think that I prefer not going to work with a bare face, but I will. And I run errands all the time completely bare faced. If I am running late to work I always try to swipe on some mascara.

What is your most cherished beauty product? All of my Hourglass products and my high end palettes.

How often do you shop for makeup? Do you like to pick up an item here and there, or get lots of goodies at once? I definitely shop more at the drugstore then Sephora. Though this year Sephora has been a bit more. I usually do an item here or there but at Sephora when the VIB sales are on are get quite a few things.

Do you have a “beauty budget” or do you spend freely? I definitely try to budget my beauty and I think I stick to it quite well. I wouldn’t say there is a specific number because I tend to buy mostly drugstore or the Body shop, but at Sephora I’d say I only go big when its the VIB sale and I’ll buy a few things here and there between them.

Do you utilize coupons, reward cards, and sales when you shop for cosmetics?Shoppers optimum points are the best. They are connected with Loblaws as well so you get points even faster to get money off.

What type of product do you buy the most of? Concealer.

Is there a brand you absolutely can’t stand? I wouldn’t say there is a brand I can’t stand, but there are brands I wish were all cruelty free like Maybelline, L’Oreal, Rimmel, Covergirl, because I really like some of the principles of these brands i.e having a wide foundation range, making quality drugstore eyeshadows as well as mascara. Yes I do own things from these brands, but alas I try to keep it 90% cruelty free.

Do you avoid certain ingredients in cosmetics, like parabens or sulfates? Yes 100%. Its really hard to find something is clean and meets my other standards. Sulfates Im not too concerned about because I don’t have coloured hair and it’s really a concern as they can be drying. I definitely try to do paraben free but if its a product like Lush Let the Good Times Roll  that have Talc and fragrance, but I will buy it because it doesn’t irritate my skin.

Do you have a favourite place to shop for makeup? Shoppers drug mart and Sephora

Do you like trying new skin care products or do you keep a certain routine? There are a few I like to religiously repurchase, Thayers Lavender witch hazel toner, the Body Shop Tea Tree scrub but I’m in the process of perfecting and finding the perfect cleanser and moisturizers and serum.

Favourite bath and body brand? Lush hands down.

What brand do you think has the best packaging? Ou this is a hard one. I love Hourglass packaging but I also love Glossier packaging. I don’t own anything from them but love their aesthetic and brand story.

Do you belong to any online makeup communities? I guess as a spectator the Youtube community and I think since I’ve been re-inspired with my blog the blogging community.

Favourite beauty gurus  Melissa Alatorre, Crueltyfreebecky, Samantha Ravndahl, Jamie Paige Beauty, Kelly Gooch, Allana Davison, Estee Lalonde (so many amazing people out there)

Do you like multi-functional products like lip and cheek stains? Yes they are my fave. I love lip and cheek stains particularly from the Body Shop and Nudestix.

Are you clumsy in putting on makeup? My eyeshadow blending can be questionable.

Do you use makeup base/primer for the eyes? Yes always!

How many hair products do you use on a typical day? Usually 1 or 2, Batiste dry shampoo and some sort of texturizing spray

What do you apply first, concealer or foundation? I never really wear a full on foundation on the daily, but rather a concealer and glowy primer, possibly a tinted moisturizer.

Would you ever consider taking makeup classes? Yes! It would be so cool!

What do you love about makeup?  I love that it is such a layered concept. There are so many feminist interests in the beauty world and I love exploring those through my blog and through theoretical and practical ways. I also love glitter and its socially acceptable to be wearing a blingy highlight during the day.

Things I liked and Did in April

First how is May already? I can’t believe it. I don’t have all my grades back yet but alas I am done my undergrad! Of course, throughout April I may (see what I did there) have found some gems that I wanted to share in things I liked and did. I really didn’t do anything so these are some of the products I was loving!

One of my 2018 goals was to find a great skincare regime and I think I have just found my favourite toner of life. The Thayers lavender toner is AMAZING. I use it every morning on a cotton pad (reusable of course) and press it into my skin. It smells wonderful and my skin loves it. Plus it’s more mid range so it’s on the affordable side and you can find it in a range of places, including Marshalls or Winners, Nutrition house and well.ca.

Something not so affordable I have been loving is is the new highlighter I bought during the sale. This is the NARS Forte De France highlighter. Excuse me while I pretend I’m the Anna Edit and wear this with my Topshop jeans and polka dot button down, basically twins. It’s beautiful! It’s very glossy and shiny and I can’t get enough it! The powder itself feels very lux and it lasts all day. It does slightly emphasize texture but to be quite honest so do all my other highlighters.

This was a bit of a surprise for me, the Body Shop Fresh Nude foundation. I am on the hunt for a good foundation that I can wear when I’m feeling foundation for the day. It is hard to find one that is cleanish ingredient wise  and that is affordable (which surprise surprise this one has some pesky ingredients that I’m not too keen on but I don’t wear it everyday so alas the hunt will continue once I use up this one). But it does have a beautiful satin finish and doesn’t require setting which I love and its great for the summer. It’s a great shade match and thus far I’m liking it!

Can I be anymore more repetitive but the Vinoperfect Glycolic Brightening Essence by Caudalie Again, a purchase from the Sephora sale. I’ll be damned but this has changed my skin. I wouldn’t say I have “bad” or “blemished” skin but I do have a bit of texture on my cheeks and t zone and find my skin feeling congested and this really brightens and clears my skin! The thing I don’t like: why is it expensive? The thing I like: the brand story, the smell, the clean ingredients and the entire brand philosophy.

A fashion fave, the Topshop raw hem jeans. By golly, I want to get a few more pairs of the Jamie jeans eventually because all Topshop jeans I have are extremely flattering and it just feels good to wear flattering jeans! They are pricey but I think they are great quality. I feel myself graduating from

The Lush Karma solid perfume. I love this scent so much, it smells exactly like a lush store. It has a fresh but warm smell, but is still a summer scent that I can get down with. I never buy scents and this is expensive in the spray form. I got the solid but by golly once I’m out of this I may just buy the full size!
